Choosing & Installing a Lift Kit for Your Vehicle

posted on
Now that summer is here, it is likely that you will see a multitude of sport utility vehicles, Jeeps, trucks, and other various vehicles that sit up a good bit higher than yours. These will come equipped with tires so large that you could probably curl up and sleep inside of them. This is due to lift kits – this car modification simply raises your ride height and provides many benefits to those who install them.
In this blog, you will learn more about the various sizing options available to you, the benefits of lift kits, and some tips for lift kit installation. Let’s get started.

Sizing Options

When it comes time to decide what size lift kit you want for your car, you should ask yourself this question… Am I driving this on the road or the trail?
Your answer to this question is important because if you choose trail, your lift will require more modifications. If you are looking for a lift kit for primarily roadway driving, you will need to consider your ability to brake and maneuver on asphalt.  Lift kits come in all sizes…
  • Small lift kit - These kits are less expensive and provide slightly more clearance while enabling you to use slightly larger tires.
  • Medium lift kit - This will change your handling and performance and require more modifications to your vehicle. (Shocks, spacers and add-a-leaf lifts may be necessary).
  • Large lift kit - This kit is the most expensive out of the three and also stands out the most. It also comes with the most modifications and adjustments.
Benefits of a Lift Kit

Lift kits come with a slew of benefits to the vehicle owner. They provide more visibility for the driver which helps them to maneuver more safely on the roadways when navigating through traffic. On the other end of this, other drivers will also definitely notice your vehicle, too. Larger tire sizes also give you an advantage during snow, mud or high heat because you have more choices when it comes time to upgrade your tires. Vehicles that have a lift kit installed are also easier to tow – if you find yourself in a sticky situation, your car will be able to be pulled out.

Lift Kit Installation

First, it is important to note that if you are uncomfortable taking on the task of installation yourself, you can go to a professional. You can install a lift kit on your own, but the larger the size, the more modifications you will have to make to your vehicle. There are 13 steps to installation that will require you to unclamp the negative battery terminal, remove your tires, shocks, u-bolts and springs, and much more. (Regardless of what steps you find on the internet, please be sure to follow your lift kit installation guidelines provided from the manufacturer.)
