How to Prepare Your Car for a Road Trip

posted on
Summer Road TripRoad trips are a great vacation, but can be tough on your vehicle. Prepare your family and your car for your next trip with our road trip essential guide.

No one likes all the prep work that goes into taking a road trip. We all just want to get going and leave the stresses of life behind. But you know what’s less fun than packing and inspecting your vehicle? Finding yourself in a lurch while on the road.

Ensuring your vehicle is in good working order and stocking up on some key emergency supplies before you set off will give you peace of mind and potentially save you from the headache of car troubles on your vacation.

Preparing your Tires

No matter what kind of terrain your vehicle will be traversing, your tires will need to be in travel shape. Before leaving, you should always check your tire pressure and fill up your tires as needed.

Keep a tire gauge handy on your trip so you can periodically check your tire pressure. Road trips are hard on tires, and you might need to refill along the way. If you’re likely to be in the wilderness or away from populous places in general, you should also bring an air compressor to inflate your own tires as needed.

Going off-roading or taking a trip to a winter wonderland? Switching out your tires completely might be in order. Be sure to do plenty of research in order to determine what kind of tires will be best suited for the terrain. You don’t want to end up stuck in the mud somewhere. That being said, you should avoid snow tires if at all possible. These wear out quickly and are not suited for traveling long distances.

Preparing your Vehicle

Make sure your car is topped off with all of the things it needs to take you on the open road. Of course you’ll need a full tank of gas, but you should also check your oil and get it replaced if your vehicle is due for it. Antifreeze and windshield wiper fluids should also be checked and replenished before your trip.

Be sure to check that your headlights, turn signals and emergency signals are all working properly and replace them if needed.

Preparing you and your Family

Just like your car, your travelers will need to be taken care of. Pack plenty of snacks as well as extra water. Both of these will be important especially if you find yourself stranded or stuck for an extended period of time. Be sure you have a good supply of your medications as well in case you don’t have access to a pharmacy on the road.

In the event that your car runs into problems on the road, bringing some basic car repair tools will be a lifesaver. Your car repair kit should include jumper cables, a tire jack, a lug wrench and a spare tire.

Emergency Items

Even if you take all the necessary precautions, you could still find yourself in a tough situation on the road. This is why an emergency kit is essential.

A good emergency kit should include basic survival items like a flashlight, a first aid kit and extra nonperishable food and water. But you’ll also want to be ready for inclement weather or low visibility conditions. Reflective triangles or flares will ensure that other drivers can see and avoid your vehicle. You should also have a fire extinguisher in the event of a serious emergency.

To prepare for possible cold weather, you should pack blankets, hats, gloves and some warm socks.  ANd be sure to pack a shovel, ice scraper and cat litter to back you up in the event that your vehicle gets stuck in the snow.

Everything else

Let’s not forget you’re going on the road trip to enjoy yourself! Load up on fun games, good music and everyone’s favorite snack.
