Why There is a Bubble in Your Tire

posted on

You’re about to get in your car to head to work when you notice an unsettling lump protruding from your tire. No, it’s not a critter setting up home in there. You most likely have a bubble in your tire. While tire bubbles aren’t uncommon, that doesn’t mean they don’t pose a hazard to driving your car safely.

What causes Bubbles in Tires?

Tires are made up of several layers. The innermost layer, while still a strong material, is not as reinforced as the outer layers. This leaves it prone to taking damage from things that wouldn’t disrupt the strongest outer layers. When the inner layer becomes damaged, it allows air to leak into the other layers, where it will find a weak spot to bulge out.

This damage can occur from driving on poorly maintained roads, but it can also happen if you’re not a careful driver. Driving over speed bumps or railroad tracks too fast, hitting curbs or driving on old or damaged tires are all moves that can lead to a bubble in your tire.

Can Bubbles in Tires be Fixed?

Unfortunately there is no way to repair a tire bubble, so a replacement tire will be necessary before your damaged one deflates and becomes more hazardous to drive on. If you find yourself with a bubble, stop in and see us at Highland Tire.
