What are Mud Tires?

posted on

Mud Tires, or Mud-Terrain Tires, are tires engineered specifically for tough and muddy terrain. Between the complex tread pattern and large tread blocks, the tire has the ability to throw off mud and debris instead of it caking into the tires. This allows your vehicle to navigate slippery and rocky terrains with ease.

Mud Tires, Highland Tire

These tires are designed for durability. Their composition makes them cut and puncture resistant and thicker sidewalls allow for airing down, which greatly improves your vehicle’s ability to tow and haul.

How Good on the Road Are Mud-Terrain Tires?

With increased durability and traction can come some drawbacks, and these are seen on the road. Paved road driving is hard on the tread of your mud tires and can wear them down faster. These tires can be noisy, especially at highway speeds.

How Long Do Mud Tires Last?

With proper care they will run about 40,000 miles. If you do a lot of pavement driving, you’re likely to greatly increase treadwear.

Do Mud Tires Affect Gas Mileage

Your vehicle’s gas mileage will be affected. Among off-road tires, they tend to have the lowest fuel efficiency. And off-road tires by and large have worse gas mileage than road tires to begin with.

Weather Conditions for Mud Terrain Tires

These tires do best in spring, summer and fall weather conditions. They excel in muddy and rocky conditions. They don’t tend to stand up to cold weather particularly well or the conditions that come along with it.

In the Rain

They’re less suited for rainy conditions than other off-roading tires. The large channels between treads compromises the tire’s ability to throw off water the way street tires can.

In the Snow

Just like they do in the rain, those wide tread channels mean that mud tires don’t perform as well in snowy and slushy conditions. However, they would still be better suited for off-road deep snow conditions than a regular road tire would.
